In Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, the air is buzzing with anticipation. In a historic move, the Czech Republic just penned a significant deal that's set to redefine its air defense capabilities. They've officially joined the elite club of F-35 operators, becoming the 18th country to acquire this stealthy fifth-generation fighter jet. The deal was sealed on January 29th. The Czech government signed a letter of offer and acceptance, with the US making a monumental shift in their military aviation strategy. They ordered 24 examples of the F-35A, the most produced variant, known for its conventional takeoff and landing prowess.

Speaker 1:

And here's a compelling perspective from Lieutenant General Carol Recha let me know if I pronounced that right the chief of the Czech Armed Forces, who stated, quote the F-35 system is the only one to meet the mission in future battlefields and guarantee effective defense, along with her allies, against external aggression, if needed. End quote. It's important to note this procurement is not just a purchase. It's a long-term commitment spanning over 11 years. The first of these advanced jets is expected to grace Czech skies by 2031. Defense Minister Jana Sernichova again let me know if I pronounced that right described these fifth-generation aircraft as the backbone of NATO's military strength. She believes this agreement catapults the Czech Armed Forces into a new era, significantly bolstering their combat readiness.

Speaker 1:

But wait, there's a twist in the tale. The Czech Air Force isn't exactly new to advanced fighters. They currently operate 12 Saab-Grippen C multirole fighters. With the upcoming arrival of the F-35s, these Swedish-made jets will gracefully complete their mission by 2035. Meanwhile, prague is in talks with Sweden to ensure the Grippins remain operational until the F-35s reach full operational capability. Furthermore, this deal isn't just about acquiring jets. It's a catalyst for industrial growth. An agreement between Washington and Prague will engage 13 Czech companies and universities in various aspects like manufacturing, r&d, pilot training and maintenance. This collaboration is projected to inject a whopping $667 million into the Czech economy. So to win for everyone, and there's more.

Speaker 1:

The Czech F-35s will be delivered in the Block 4 configuration. This version is still under development, promising significant upgrades in weapons communications and sensors. The journey to this upgrade, however, hasn't been without its challenges, especially with the certification of the new flight computer and operating software known as Technology Refresh 3, or TR3. Despite some delivery delays and production challenges, lockheed Martin has not slowed down. They've recently completed their 1,000th F-35, a testament to their commitment to this program. As we look towards the mid 2030s, it's projected that over 600 F-35s will be operated by more than 10 European countries, including two Air Force squadrons in the UK. Effectively, this makes the F-35 the default fighter of Western Europe. The F-35 saga continues to unfold and we'll be right here to bring you the latest updates.
